Why We Meet – CAPED 2011

Your attendance at the CAPED Annual Convention in 2011 is more critical than ever before.  CAPED is your professional association and has been the epicenter of legislation, professional standards, and the development and growth of our industry. The work of our membership has enabled us as professionals to bring cutting edge innovations, techniques and state-of-the-art technological solutions to students with disabilities in postsecondary education throughout the State of California and beyond.  The CAPED family continues to bring the best of our profession to a broader national audience.  This fact will be born out with the anticipated return of CAPED Past-President and current Under Secretary for the Department of Education, Dr. Martha Kanter to this year’s convention in Riverside.

In what is arguably one of the darkest times in the rich history of postsecondary education in California, I urge you to find a way to make it to the convention this year.  The aftershock of the economic collapse in our State will be built from the membership of our association.   Last year, Scott Hamilton referred to the many instances of programs, services, activities, and legislation that were conceived, born and bred in formal and informal meetings at our annual convention.  This year is no different as the theme for this year’s convention was brought to life on some napkins in the lounge at the San Jose convention.   Whatever it takes, whether plane, car pool or hang glider you need to be a part of CAPED 2011- “Connecting the DOTS”  for our future.

Last year’s participation from the California Health Improvement Incentives Project (CHIIP) added some youthful energy to an already outstanding convention program in San Jose.   This year our program will be equally exciting as CHIIP renews their relationship with CAPED and will be our partners once again.   Supporting the professional development of our members is core to our mission.  The CAPED convention is an opportunity to spend some time with professionals who speak the same language, share the same frustrations, and who are cut from a different cloth.  Just like you!  Ride the wave of the aftershock and become a part of history.  We look forward to seeing you in Riverside at CAPED 2011-Connecting the DOTS.

Mark Matsui, CAPED President
